Today I went to Raker Lakes at Wheldrake, near York. For a spot of winter Carping with my son Daniel.
We arrived there at 7:30am just as the owner was unlocking the gate, we headed up the lane to the Kingfisher Lake, this is the specimen lake here at the complex.
The weather was quite mild and the sun was trying to make an appearance, there were 2 bivvy boys who had been there overnight, they had had some success.
We chose to fish peg 12 that has a small island to the left and a big island in front of us. We set up 3 rods 2 with pop up Pineapple and Banana boilies the third with popup corn. Boilies to the Islands and Corn in open water.
The rods had only been in the water 20 minutes and the corn buzzer was buzzing the run was on, a nice 10 ˝lb mirror, we re-baited and within minutes an other run, this time an 18lb mirror, we had just sat down for a brew and off the same buzzer went. This time it was a screamer and we landed a 20 lb mirror.
The cloud and the wind started to pick up and we thought that was going to be it, after a short lull the corn rod was off again a 16˝lb mirror in the net. We had the lads from the pegs next to us asking what we were using, as they were both using frozen boilies and didn't bring any corn with them. So I thought we can bag up here. We put the rod out again and baited the other two up with corn and fished a Gully running in front of us about a third of the way out. I had put my middle rod down and clipped up and it went screaming, by now Dan and myself had a routine worked out - he netted the fish, I put it on the mat and un-hooked it, he fetched the scales I weighed the fish and he had the camera ready.
We went into the routine this time and the carp was having none of it. As it came to the bank it made another run for it eventually we netted it, weighed it 21lb this for me is a personal best. With 3 more Mirrors 12 ˝, 8 ˝ &16 ˝ and the wind and now the rain it as time to go home. 8 hours fishing, 8 carp and a PB to boot this was a very fulfilling outing to Raker and one I will be doing again very shortly. Where are we going next?
